Κατεπλάγη Ἰωσήφ, τὸ ὑπὲρ φύσιν θεωρῶν, καὶ ἐλάμβανεν εἰς νοῦν, τὸν ἐπὶ πόκονὑετὸν, ἐν τῇ ἀσπόρῳ συλλήψει σου Θεοτόκε, βάτον ἐν πυρὶ ἀκατάφλεκτον, ῥάβδον Ἀαρὼν τὴν βλαστήσασαν, καὶ μαρτυρῶν ὁ Μνήστωρ σου καὶ φύλαξ, τοῖς Ἱερεύσιν ἐκραύγαζε· Παρθένος τίκτει, καὶ μετὰ τόκον, πάλιν μένει παρθένος.

Joseph was amazed to see * that which transcended nature’s bounds, * for without seed, thou, O Maid, * didst both conceive and bear a Child. * And he remembered the blossoming rod of Aaron, * the dew upon the fleece, * and the unburning bush * which was not consumed, * though it was all aflame. * Thus, thy protector and betrothed cried, * as he bare wit¬ness before the priests: * A Virgin beareth, and after childbirth * still remaineth a Virgin.

At your conceiving without seed, O Mother of God, Joseph was struck with wonder as he contemplated what was beyond nature, and he brought to mind the dew on the fleece, the bush unburned by fire, Aaron’s rod which blossomed; and your Betrothed and guardian bore witness and cried to the priests: A Virgin bears a child, and after child-birth remains still a virgin.

Joseph marvelled, beholding that which transcendeth nature, and pondering thy seedless conception he dwelt in thought upon the dew which fell upon the fleece, the bush unconsumed by fire, and the rod of Aaron which put forth branches. And thy guardian and betrothed cried out to the priests: "The Virgin giveth birth, and even after birthgiving remaineth virgin!"

Your seedless conceiving past nature, O Theotokos, struck Joseph with wonder! It brought to mind the fleece wet with dew, the bush that burned yet was not consumed and the rod of Aaron that budded! In witness to these things, your spouse and guardian cried to the priests: “A virgin bears a child and after childbearing remains a virgin!”
